14th Annual Health & Benefits Fair

The 14th Annual Health & Benefits Fair will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm on the Evanston campus in the Norris University Center in the Louis Room and surrounding area.  This event is free and open to the entire NU community.  The Fair will provide the opportunity to learn more about the University’s benefits plans and provide access to a variety of health and fitness screenings, workshops, information, educational materials, and referrals.  The Fair will feature the following:

  • Over 50 exhibitors with an exciting array of topics including exercise/fitness, cancer, diabetes, healthy cooking, childcare, stress and relaxation, CPR, ergonomics/office safety, travel, and more!
  • A chance to speak with Healthcare Representatives.
  • FREE specialty classes conducted by the NU Group Fitness Program Staff.
  • FREE health and fitness screenings.
  • FREE fitness advice.
  • A chance to win great prizes!

Northwestern University’s 2009 Open Enrollment for benefits begins on Monday, Oct. 27, and runs through 5 pm on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008. Take care to choose the benefits that will best meet your needs throughout 2009.

Preparing for Open Enrollment

The best way to prepare for Open Enrollment is to assess your needs and all of your options:
  • Read about your options in the 2009 Open Enrollment Guide.
  • Attend a Benefits Fair: 
    • Chicago Campus Oct. 14, Lurie Center Atrium, 12 noon to 4 pm
    • Evanston Campus--Oct. 15, Norris University Center, 11 am to 2 pm
  • Attend an Open Enrollment presentation, Q&A session or Open Lab.  Dates and times can be found on PlanItPurple.

Important Reminders

  • The health care, limited use, and dependent care flexible spending accounts can be valuable benefits because they allow you to pay for eligible health care and dependent care expenses on a pretax basis. You must enroll during Open Enrollment to participate in any of these accounts in 2009.
  • The underwriter for the life insurance plans is changing to ReliaStar Life Insurance Company. You can read about this change and your options to increase coverage in the 2009 Open Enrollment Guide.
  • Before Open Enrollment, validate your dependent and beneficiary information using HRIS Self Service at https://nuhr.northwestern.edu . Select the Update NU Life Ins Beneficiary link under Benefits.

WORK/LIFE BENEFITS

Weight Watchers-at-Work Meetings

Are you interested in forming a Weight Watchers on-site meeting in Evanston?  The cost is $186 for a 17-week session (3 payment options available).  This also includes 19 weeks of FREE ETOOLS.  The Work/Life office will explore the addition of an on-site meeting based on adequate interest.  Please contact p-ellis@northwestern.edu to express your interest.

Updating your Online Directory Information

It’s that time of year again!  Please take a moment to review and update your Online Directory information.  To access the online directory, log into HRIS self-service using your NetID and password and within the menu, click the Online Directory link.  To review your information click and drag the scroll bar on the right of the page.  Within each section is a link to add/change your directory information and check boxes to select the information you would like to be displayed.  Any changes that are made will appear on the online directory the following day.

NEW Fall Offerings

Registration is open for NU's Fall training & development offerings, which will help individuals and organizations work more effectively.  Learning opportunities from October through December include NEW workshops, tools and coaching in the areas of:

 

  • Leadership & Management: Role differences, recruitment, hiring, NU Performance Excellence, delegation, resource utilization, team building, problem solving . . . and NEW workshops about NU compensation and coolness under pressure
  • NU Business Processes: Internal controls, ethics . . . and a NEW workshop on NU compensation
  • Workplace Skills: Project management, meeting management, customer service, business writing . . . and a NEW workshop about coolness under pressure
  • Managing Your Career: Assessment, exploring options, creating your plan, applying for the job, interviewing
  • Organization Development: Strategic planning, process improvement, communication
  • New Employee Orientation Part 2: Q&A with NU senior leader; University's mission, vision, Standards for Business Conduct, Performance Excellence process; network-building luncheon with colleagues
  • Computer Applications: Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Office 2003 and NEW Office 2007 Access, Excel, Mail Merge, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Word . . . and a NEW workshop about transitioning to Office 2007
